Roughly half of American adults have high blood pressure, and most don't know it until something goes wrong. It damages your heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes for years before any symptom appears. The fix is straightforward: accurate measurement, the right plan, and consistent follow-up. That's what we do at Lifetime Vitality Clinic.

01

What is hypertension?

Blood pressure measures the force of blood against your artery walls. It's recorded as two numbers: systolic (top) over diastolic (bottom). Current guidelines:

  • Normal: under 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120–129 / under 80
  • Stage 1 hypertension: 130–139 / 80–89
  • Stage 2 hypertension: 140+ / 90+
  • Hypertensive crisis: 180+/120+, seek emergency care
02

Why it matters

Untreated high blood pressure raises your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, vision loss, and dementia, and the damage is silent and cumulative. The upside: even modest reductions substantially lower these risks.

03

How we treat it

Treatment is tailored to how high your numbers are, what's driving them, and what other conditions you have. Common elements:

  • Accurate in-office and at-home monitoring (we'll teach you how)
  • Lifestyle interventions: sodium reduction, DASH-style eating, exercise, sleep, stress
  • First-line medications: ACE inhibitors, ARBs, calcium channel blockers, thiazide diuretics
  • Combination therapy when one medication isn't enough
  • Workup for secondary causes when the pattern looks unusual
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction, lipids, diabetes, weight

When to come in

If you've never been screened, you have a family history, or your home readings are consistently above 130/80, give us a call. If you're already on medication and your numbers aren't controlled, come in too, we can often do better.

Questions, Answered

Frequently asked questions.

Don’t see your question? Reach out and we’ll answer it directly.

Do I need medication for high blood pressure?
Not always. Stage 1 hypertension without other cardiovascular risk factors can sometimes be managed with lifestyle changes alone. Stage 2, or hypertension with diabetes, kidney disease, or prior cardiovascular events, almost always requires medication.
How often should I check my blood pressure at home?
If you're newly diagnosed or recently changed medications, twice daily for two weeks gives us the data we need. Once stable, a few times a week is enough.
Are blood pressure medications safe long-term?
Yes. The medications we use most often have decades of safety data. The risks of untreated hypertension are far greater than any side effects.
Can high blood pressure be cured?
In some cases, particularly when it's driven by weight, alcohol, sleep apnea, or a treatable secondary cause, blood pressure can return to normal and medications can be reduced or stopped. For most patients, it's a long-term condition that's well-controlled with the right plan.
